Description
The barred owl (Strix varia), also known as northern barred owl or hoot owl, is a true owl native to eastern North America. They are opportunistic feeders, who are known to hunt both at night and by day. I encountered this one, mid morning. He flew to a tree branch beside the trail, and hung out for quite a while. He didn't seem bothered by my company, as I kept a respectful distance, but if you look closely, you can see the reflection of my jeep in his eye!
