Black bears are only found in North America, and North Carolina is home to some of the largest, and has the highest black bear densities. This big boar probably weighs 600-700 pounds. He has been through many battles for dominance in his mating territory. His left ear is badly damaged, from being bitten or beaten on, in battle. He is nicknamed "cauliflower" because of this. I spotted him as he was leaving the fields after feeding during the night. I waited for him to cross the canal and climb this small ridge, to grab this shot. It was early morning, and he was headed to the woods to escape the heat of the day.
I was born and raised in eastern North Carolina. Now, back home, and just enjoying the ride. I've been a photographer for over 40 years, first as a hobbyist, and then as a professional. I've enjoyed a lifelong love affair with animals domestic and wild, especially horses. I am an animal advocate, an outdoorsman, and naturalist first, and then a photographer. I believe that it is important to know, understand, and respect and protect the subjects that you want to photograph before ever setting foot in the wild.
