Did you know that Magnolia is an ancient genus? Appearing before bees did, the flowers are theorized to have evolved to encourage pollination by beetles. There are 210 different species, worldwide. However, if you are from the south, this is the one you know and love! Known as Southern Magnolia, it can be identified by its thick, glossy leaves and big, fragrant white blossoms, it is prominant from North Carolina to central Florida, and west to East Texas. It blooms in summer and is the state flower of both Mississippi and Louisiana. In many cultures, magnolias are symbols of womanly beauty and gentleness, and represent purity and nobility.
I was born and raised in eastern North Carolina. Now, back home, and just enjoying the ride. I've been a photographer for over 40 years, first as a hobbyist, and then as a professional. I've enjoyed a lifelong love affair with animals domestic and wild, especially horses. I am an animal advocate, an outdoorsman, and naturalist first, and then a photographer. I believe that it is important to know, understand, and respect and protect the subjects that you want to photograph before ever setting foot in the wild.
