A young stallion, already battle scarred, and his three mares, form a close group. These horses, feeding on marsh grass, are actually feral, since they are wild Spanish Mustangs, mixed with domestic horses brought to the island in the 1940s, by a local resident who owned the island for a while. The area, now known as the Rachel Carson Reserve, is a complex of islands, dedicated as a Nature Preserve, off the coast of Beaufort, North Carolina. It can only be reached by boat! These horses, live and survive the sometimes harsh coastal conditions, entirely on their own. They are wild! The horses with the strongest Spanish Mustang heritage, can often be identified by the presence of a dorsal stripe.
