Description
This old stallion had just had a roll in the damp sand near the shore. They do this to get relief from the flies, as well as to provide a natural sunscreen, and in this case, to sooth wounds from a recent territorial battle. He paused for a moment as he gathered to lift himself up. These decedents of Spanish Mustangs, also known as Banker horses, have roamed and survived on these remote beaches for nearly 500 years. In June, 1982, members of the Spanish Mustang Registry came to the Outer Banks and “due to feats of great endurance”, were able to observe the last known remaining bands of Banker Horses still existing in the natural state as they have been for the past 500 years – on the Currituck County Outer Banks. The Spanish Mustang Registry is satisfied that the Banker Horses, in particular the Corolla strain, are as lineally pure to the 16th century Spanish importations as can be found in North America today.
