A beautiful female Red-Bellied Woodpecker perched briefly on a corn stalk. The Red-bellied Woodpecker is named for its blushing belly of sorts, but because it so often has its belly against the tree it is clinging to, we often don't notice any hint of red except on the head. This leads to much confusion about the name of this bird, unless you happen to be a birder. This is a female, since she has only the bright red nape, and not the red crown.
I was born and raised in eastern North Carolina. Now, back home, and just enjoying the ride. I've been a photographer for over 40 years, first as a hobbyist, and then as a professional. I've enjoyed a lifelong love affair with animals domestic and wild, especially horses. I am an animal advocate, an outdoorsman, and naturalist first, and then a photographer. I believe that it is important to know, understand, and respect and protect the subjects that you want to photograph before ever setting foot in the wild. Self-described as a thinker, philosopher, photographer, and geek, but mostly just a dreamer! I won't bore you with a lot of pretense and fluff.
