Description
An old stallion on the beach! A herd of wild horses lives on the coast of North Carolina. These decendents of Spanish Mustangs, roam freely on the northern Outer Banks, near Corolla, NC, and have for nearly 500 years. This stallion, was following along, about 30 yards behind a young stallion and his new harem. The young stallion had successfully defeated and driven off the old guy, and even though he limped a bit, he stayed as close as the young one would allow. He knew he wasn't ready for a rematch, yet, so he followed, and massaged his wounds with a roll in the wet sand. Here, he stands, watching and waiting, as his group of mares move away, with the young stallion. Perhaps he will regain his strength for an attempt to take back that which was his, or perhaps he will live out his days on the periphery of the herd. So goes the circle of life, in the wild.

Beautiful capture Fon of this old fella and loved the story behind him. The depth and texture are really nice in this B&W. This capture reminds me of Assateague Island, a 37 mile barrier island located here in Maryland were the wild horses and ponies roam free. Also a favorite photographing location for me, so much beauty and nature to be seen :)

Thank you, Connie! I love the wild horses, and have wanted to make the trip up to Assateague, but haven't found the time yet.
