Description
Cormorants are common all over the coast of North Carolina, and variants of the species are found nearly all over the world. This one, prominent on the Outer Banks, is known as the Double-crested Cormorant, noted by the yellow-orange facial skin, and the sharply curved beak. They also have bluish eyes, though this one has it's nictitating membrane closed. The double-crest is only prominent in breeding season. This poor guy was huddled against the blowing sand on a very windy day on the beach. Winds at nearly 30 knots were blowing sand so hard that it stung my skin. I was fortunate to be sheltered somewhat by my Jeep, as I crouched down by the tire, to get this low perspective.
