Description
This young buck has shed his antlers. If you look closely, you can see the bumps, or pedicles, on his head where the antlers will grow back. Whitetail deer shed their antlers late February through early March. They grow back during the summer, covered in velvet. In late summer the velvet begins to fall off, aided by the deer rubbing them on trees and shrubs. By fall, the new antlers are clean and fully hardened, ready for the rut. It's an annual cycle.
