An old wooden fishing boat on Hatteras Island, NC, on a dead calm morning. The water, in this little harbor, was like glass, providing this nice reflection. This traditional craft is used to fish with nets in the Sound. The motors were mounted in a console inside the craft. This allowed the boat to haul large nets, and also allowed fishermen room to work the nets on the back of the boat.
I was born and raised in eastern North Carolina. Now, back home, and just enjoying the ride. I've been a photographer for over 40 years, first as a hobbyist, and then as a professional. I've enjoyed a lifelong love affair with animals domestic and wild, especially horses. I am an animal advocate, an outdoorsman, and naturalist first, and then a photographer. I believe that it is important to know, understand, and respect and protect the subjects that you want to photograph before ever setting foot in the wild. Self-described as a thinker, philosopher, photographer, and geek, but mostly just a dreamer! I won't bore you with a lot of pretense and fluff. I have won awards, been published and all that, and so it seems, has everyone else, and...

Born and raised on the coast of NC this image brings back memories. One wonders if you know just what kind of fishing boat this is. Unless I miss my guess this boat was used for setting a Purse Seine, (targeting menhaden) I wish you could have spoken to the owner of the boat in order to learn more about it. At any rate it is a wonderful photograph and I was glad I was able to see it.
Fon Denton replied:
Thanks Walter! I too wish I could have spoken to the owner. I'm sure he would have great stories to tell. It was a quiet morning, with no one around. many of the old wooden boats have been adapted over the years, so it is difficult to identify the origin without local help. It was definitely used for netting in the sound. Whether seine or gill nets, I'm not sure. I was thrilled to see it and capture this image. Also, pleased that it brought memories to someone else. Thanks for the comments.
