Description
The historic Webb's Mill sits on the Tar river, near Spring Hope, North Carolina. This traditional grist mill, built in the late 1800s, by James T Webb, was still working up until the late 1960's. Mr. Webb, is known as the man who caused the town of Spring Hope to up and move! In 1886, a railroad line was laying track to connect Rocky Mount to Raleigh, NC. The proposed line was to cross his land. He didn't want it to, and raised the price of his land so high that the railroad stopped at the edge of it. The railroad stopped, and built a depot at the edge of his property, about 4 miles from the original town of Spring Hope. Since Spring Hope was the nearest post office, the railroad applied to call the depot area by the same name. A new town sprouted up around the depot, and eventually everyone but a few, left the "original Spring Hope.
