Description
The smell of love is in the air, for this wild stallion. The bay mare to the left is in estrous, but not yet ready to accept him. He has been following, sniffing, and waiting all afternoon. This is part of the feral wild herd on Rachel Carson Reserve. They are decendents of Colonial Spanish Mustangs from 500 years ago, and domestic horses introduced to the islands in the 1940s by a local resident who owned Carrot Island for a while. The entire area is now a Dedicated Natur Preserve. You can see the strong signs of the Spanish Mustang heritage in some, with the dorsal stripe and low set tail.
