Description
I love bears! Eastern North Carolina is home to a large population of American Black Bear. I frequently hike through the wildlife refuges, to find and spend time with them, and of course, to photograph. I just love watching them, though. I spent over an hour with this young female, at Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. She was probably in her second year, and her first on her own. They usually stay with their moms from birth through the next breeding season. I sat on the opposite side of the canal, and watched her feed on the fresh grass, groom herself, and even sit and lay down for a while. She was aware of me, but seemed unbothered with the company, as she was comfortable enough to behave normally. She even turned around and stuck her tongue out at me, lol.

Great shot! She looks small!
Fon Denton replied:
Thank you! She is young, and probably just out of hibernation. She will fill out some as the summer goes on :)

That is fantastic that you were able to observe this bear and she let you, Fon. Great shot!
Fon Denton replied:
Thank you, Kathy! We practiced social distancing :) Seriously though, I always try to maintain a respectful distance when observing and photographing wild animals, so as not to disturb their natural behavior.
