The Oaky Grove Church is part of a former plantation and tenant farm, known as Mial Plantation. This plantation was one of the original land grants in North Carolina. The land was acquired by Mallichi Hinton in 1761 "from Lord Granville of England". Much of the land has been sold off for residential development, in the last decade, but some of the farm, approximately 345 acres, is still owned and operated by members of the Mial and Williamson families, including the land that holds the church and family cemetery. The church itself, was built in 1876, and served the plantation and it's neighbors. Local history has it that the church was built at the request of a man's fiancé, who claimed that she would not marry him until he built the church. It fell into such disrepair, that many feared that it would be lost, however minor repairs and a little fresh paint, in 2017, eased folk's concerns. This is as it stands in 2020.

I believe that it is important to know, understand, and respect and protect the subjects that you want to photograph before ever setting foot in the wild. Self-described as a thinker, philosopher, photographer, and geek, but mostly just a dreamer! I won't bore you with a lot of pretense and fluff. I have won awards, been published and all that, and so it seems, has everyone else, and...
