There was once an estimated half million tobacco barns dotted, on farms accross North Carolina. Now, there are less than 50,000 still standing. Reminders of the days of "flue-cured" tobacco, and it's importance to our state. Most barns were tall, square buildings, but the materials used varied by region. Some were hewn logs and mortar, some sawn timber, reinforced with tin, or tar paper. A wood fired furnace was used to produce smoke and heat to dry or "cure" the tobacco leaves hanging inside. Furnace types also varied, based on where the barns were located. In the Piedmont, many would be built of stone, but in the flat coastal plains, bricks were used. By the 1950's, many had been converted to oil or natural gas. In the seventys these were phased out by the use of more modern bulk-curing barns.
I was born and raised in eastern North Carolina. Now, back home, and just enjoying the ride. I've been a photographer for over 40 years, first as a hobbyist, and then as a professional. I've enjoyed a lifelong love affair with animals domestic and wild, especially horses. I am an animal advocate, an outdoorsman, and naturalist first, and then a photographer. I believe that it is important to know, understand, and respect and protect the subjects that you want to photograph before ever setting foot in the wild.
