Artist's Description

There was once an estimated half million tobacco barns dotted, on farms accross North Carolina. Now, there are less than 50,000 still standing. Reminders of the days of "flue-cured" tobacco, and it's importance to our state. Most barns were tall, square buildings, but the materials used varied by region. Some were hewn logs and mortar, some sawn timber, reinforced with tin, or tar paper. A wood fired furnace was used to produce smoke and heat to dry or "cure" the tobacco leaves hanging inside. Furnace types also varied, based on where the barns were located. In the Piedmont, many would be built of stone, but in the flat coastal plains, bricks were used. By the 1950's, many had been converted to oil or natural gas. In the seventys these were phased out by the use of more modern bulk-curing barns.

Self-described as a thinker, philosopher, photographer, and geek, but mostly just a dreamer! I won't bore you with a lot of pretense and fluff. I have won awards, been published and all that, and so it seems, has everyone else, and...
