The hard rains left the roads of the refuge wet and muddy, and that brought out the turtles. So many were traversing the roads, that I had to be careful as I drove through the Pocosin Lakes Wildlife Refuge. This young Snapping Turtle was maybe six inches long, but he seemed unperturbed as I approached to take this shot. He posed patiently, with his best "don't mess with me" face. He will grow to become one of the largest freshwater turtles in North Carolina. Adults can weigh up to 50 lbs.
