Description

This is the third iteration of the Bodie (pronounced 'Body') Island Lighthouse, just south of Nags Head, NC, on the Outer Banks. It was completed in 1872, and is 156 feet tall. The first was built in 1857. It is also, one of a few brick tower lighthouses still working in the US, and one of a few lighthouses that use an original first-order Fresnel lens.

It is said that the area got it's name from all the bodies that used to wash ashore from the many shipwrecks.
