Description
Drift netting, or Gill netting is a controversila fishing technique, that has been banned or severly restricted in many states. Gill nets are a floating wall of monofilament netting that catches almost anything that swims into it. The amount of non-targeted catch, or by-catch is high! This by-catch is discarded by the fishermen, and suffers a very high mortality rate. There is a big fight brewing as the Division of Marine Fisheries undertakes a revies of many factors such as the size of mesh, length allowed. Bans have already been implemented in certain areas of the state, but they are being challenged. While I understand the tradition, and need to make a living in a very harsh industry, I will be glad to see this type of fishing gone for good. The cost to the fisheries and to the environment is too high, in my opinion, and that of many marine scientists.
