Description
A large male Black Bear heads out of the corn field in the early morning light, on the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. They feed at night and in the early morning, then usually head for the woods, to sleep during the day. This guy came walking out of the cornfield, not 20 yards from where I was standing! Neither of us expected to see each other, at that moment. His one of the largest I have encountered. He was big enough, and confident enough that he moved easily, and barely gave a 'harrumph' when he spotted me, and continued on his path. Eastern North Carolina is home to some of the largest black bear in the country.
