Description
A beautiful Golden Orb Weaver spider, in the center of it's web , backlit by the morning sunlight. How many of you have walked into one of these, and freaked a bit? They are harmless to humans and great garden partners, as they prey on harmful insects. Damp with the morning dew, and backlit by the sun, it is highly visible. However, from the opposite direction, the highly detailed web, fades into invisibility. The dense zigzag of silk in the center, known as a stabilimentum, is only seen in the web of spiders which are active during the day. It's purpose is widely debated. Some say it acts as camouflage for the spider lurking in the web's center, some say it attracts prey, and some contend that it is to warn birds of the otherwise hard to see web.
