Description
The canals in Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, were originally part of a pre-refuge plan to drain the lake for farming land. When not much usable land was revealed, the project was abandonded. It was later discovered that removing the moisture from the land damaged the pocosin habitat. The Pungo National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1963. In 1990, it became part of the much larger Pocosin Lakes Wildlife Refuge, covering 110,000 acres. The canals are now used to manage the water levels, to maintain a healthy habitat, for numerous indigeneous wildlife species.
